The serial number on this gun is #129,120. Evidently there was improper heat treating to the receiver which makes it possible for it to cause seriously damaging failures. After looking it up a little bit, apparently there's a danger in shooting the sub #250,000 rifles. Just grabbed another family rifle, a Rock Island Arsenal model 1903.30-06. Please enter a serial number and click the submit button. Military M1903 Rifle: Rock Island Arsenal: Covering numbers: 1 - 445000. Higher serial numbers are said to be 'double-heat-treated.' Toward the end of the war, Springfield turned out the Model 1903 Mark I. Lower serial numbers are known as 'low-number' M1903 rifles. The change was made at approximately serial number 800,000 for rifles made at Springfield Armory and at serial number 285,507 at Rock Island Arsenal. While this SN would apparently put it out of the range of the so called 'low serial number' rifles, the listing that I found ends with SN 348414 manufactured in 1919. As I check the SN listings that I find, this SN does not appear in the numbers listed under Rock Island. I recently acquired a 1903 Rock Island Armory rifle with a serial number of 393XXX.
